Egypt and Vietnam Relations


- Egypt was the first Arabian country to establish relationship with Vietnam. In 1958, Vietnam opened its commercial representative office in Egypt. On September 1st 1963, the two countries established official diplomatic relations. In the same year, the Embassy of Vietnam was opened in Cairo. In 1964, Egypt opened its Embassy in Hanoi.

Egyptian Delegations to Vietnam: Minister of Education (July 1996); Assistant to Minister of Foreign Affairs (June 1996); Delegation of the People’s Democratic Party (December 1997); Director of the Authority for National Administrative Supervision (March 1999); Chief of staff of the West region military zone (July 2004); Assistant to Minister of Foreign Affairs (October 2004); Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (December 2004), and Minister for International Cooperation visited  Vietnam and attended the inter-governmental Committee’s meeting (April 2007).
- Agreements signed between Egypt and Vietnam: Trade Agreement (May 1994); Protocol of Cooperation between Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Egypt and Vietnam (June 1996); Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (September 1997); Scientific and Technological Cooperation Agreement (September 1997); Inspection Cooperation Agreement (March 1999); Aviation Cooperation Agreement (April 1999); Agreement on double taxation avoidance and income tax fraud prevention regarding income taxes (March 2006); Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Cooperation (March 2006);  Cultural and Social Cooperation Program for the period of 2006-2010 (March 2006); and Memorandum of Understanding between Vietnam’s Trade Promotion Department and Egypt’s International Trade Exhibition Organization (Marhch 2006).
Vietnam-Egypt Inter-governmental Committee held the first session in September 1997 in Hanoi, the second one in March 2006 in Cairo and the third in April 2007 in Hanoi. Trade volume between the two countries reached respectively USD 22.7 million in 2002 (Vietnam’s export value reached USD 21.8 million); USD 29 million  in 2003 (Vietnam’s export value was USD 22.2 million); USD 41.1 million  in 2004 (with Vietnam’s export value of USD 38.7 million ); USD 64.2 million  in 2005(with Vietnam’s export value of USD 45.1 million ); and more than USD 60 million in 2006 (with Vietnam’s  export value of USD 44 million). Vietnam’s main export items to Egypt are electronic components, black pepper, tobacco materials, textile fibers, coconut products, fishing net, coffee, footwear, household appliances, rubber, automotive tires and tubes, electric products and rice. Vietnam’s main import items from Egypt include raw materials, chemical substances, pharmaceutical products, metal scraps, and other consumer goods.
